Experiencing Grief after Your Child has Died
The loss of a child is one of the most devastating experiences that parents can face, and it is a pain that never truly goes away. No parent should ever have to bury their child. Along with going through the stages of grief, parents may feel a sense of unfairness at their loss. They often feel as though a piece of them is missing, wondering how they will ever go on, and questioning if only they had done something different. Parents may get angry at the world, themselves, or even each other, feeling as though they were robbed from getting to watch and help their little one grow, or that they have somehow failed their child.
It does not matter how old the child was when they died. Whether they were adults themselves, or they were just infants, the overwhelming emotion of losing a child is all the same. Parents often feel shock, and some may even experience denial. You may feel confused, guilty or powerless. You may even experience a loss of all hope, and you may wonder how you will possibly go on.

The grief of losing a child doesn’t ever really go away. While you eventually figure out how to go on with your life, your child’s memory is always with you. And it is possible that you may even experience surges of grief. These surges often occur around your child’s birthday, when they would begin school, when they would graduate, or even when you might expect them to get married. Parents are not usually prepared for these triggers, or the overwhelming emotions that they cause. What is important is that you are able to recognize what caused the emotional response and allow yourself time to grieve. It is normal, and an important part of the healing process.
Give Yourself Time To Grieve
Giving yourself time to grieve is essential, and there are plenty of ways in which you can do this. First, it is important that you acknowledge the guilt, and the other emotions, that you feel. Take small steps. Deal with small portions of your day at a time. Get out of bed. Take care of daily tasks. Do little things that are a part of your normal daily routine. Accept happiness. You might feel as though you will never experience happiness again, but you will. And it is important to allow it in. It’s okay to smile and laugh. You are not forsaking the memory of your child. In fact, allowing happiness into your life can help you to better deal with the bereavement.
Grief Support Group
Another way to deal with your grief is to seek help. You could join a grief support group. This provides you with a safe place to express your feelings with others who have been through a similar experience. You can learn from one another and help each other to cope. You may also seek individual or family therapy if you feel the grief is too strong.
Why Have a Memorial Butterfly Release Remembering a Child Who Has Died?
Yet another way to deal with the grief of losing your child is to have a memorial service. Memorial services provide a way to bring family and friends together to remember the child. Memorial services can happen shortly after the child’s death, around the child’s birthday, or can even be an annual occurrence.

Why butterflies? Butterflies are a unique creature that carries a significant amount of symbolism. They represent life. They also symbolize endurance, change, resurrection and the soul.
The symbolism of butterflies can be found throughout different cultures all throughout the world, and some of this symbolism dates back centuries. In Greek mythology, the goddess Psyche, which literally translates to soul, has been represented by a butterfly. In Ireland, the butterfly is believed to the carrier of souls of the deceased as they wait to pass through purgatory. White butterflies in Ireland are believed to carry the souls of deceased children, and it is prohibited to kill them.

In Mexican culture, the butterfly is believed to carry the souls of departed loved ones, but they are also seen as a symbol of celebration. At the end of October into November, Mexico celebrates "the Day of the Dead." This is the day in which people remember their departed loved ones. It is not a sad day. In fact, it is a happy celebration. It is also the same time that migrating Monarchs arrive from the north. People believe that the Monarchs carry the souls of their departed loved ones, and are bringing them back to visit. The Monarchs are so revered in Mexican culture that is considered extremely disrespectful to disturb them or take them. Even dead Monarchs are not to be taken. Disturbing the butterflies is seen as disturbing the dead.
With all of the symbolism that surrounds butterflies, it is easy to see why they are the perfect way to honor the memory of your deceased child. They are more than just a beautiful sight, they can also provide a sense of comfort as you watch them flutter into the air and mingle among the guests at your memorial service.
Types of Butterflies Used in a Memorial Butterfly Release
There are two types of butterflies that are perfect for releasing during your memorial service, Monarchs and Painted Ladies.
Monarch Butterflies
Picture Caption: Monarch Butterflies from Cloverlawn Butterflies Butterfly Release Company
Monarch butterflies are one of the most recognizable butterflies, with their vibrant orange wings and striking black markings. These butterflies are also quite large, measuring between 10 and 13 centimeters.
Monarch butterflies are fairly widespread, and can be found just about anywhere around the world. In North America, these butterflies migrate south from the northern United States and Canada. They head to southern California or into Mexico, some butterflies traveling up to 2,000 miles. Interestingly, they follow the same exact paths of their ancestors, and even land on the same trees.
Painted Lady Butterflies
Painted Lady butterflies are another large butterfly, measuring between 5 and 7 centimeters. They are also brightly colored, with wings of orange outlined with black, and black splotches dotting them. Also known as the Cosmopolitan butterfly, Painted Ladies are widespread, native to just about everywhere around the world except Australia and Antarctica. They love open meadows and gardens.
Unlike Monarchs, Painted Ladies rarely migrate. One of the most common reasons for migration is not the change of seasons, but because of a population explosion, and the butterflies need space to live. When they migrate, they move in massive numbers, which can create a beautiful sight as they flutter by. Additionally, these butterflies may migrate north, rather than south.

Finally, our Beautiful Painted Ladies are quite friendly, and rather social. Most butterflies are scared of people, and will fly away when anyone attempts to approach them. Releasing these butterflies would be a brief moment of enjoyment before they scattered. Painted Lady butterflies, on the other hand, tend to linger after they are released, enjoying your celebration with you. You may find them decorating your table, the centerpieces, or even the clothing of your guests, all scenes that will make for rather memorable photographs. Once the ceremony is over, and the sun begins to set, then the butterflies will take off in search of food and shelter.
Honoring the Memory of Your Child with Your Butterfly Release Memorial Service
So, what is it about Monarch and Painted Ladies that make them so perfect for honoring the memory of your child at your butterfly release memorial service? There are actually several reasons. One of the main reasons has to do with the fact that they are native to many regions. This means that no matter where you hold your memorial service, these butterflies will be able to make themselves at home and thrive in their new environment.

The size and color of Monarch and Painted Ladies also make them ideal. They are both large species of butterflies, where most others are small. They are also brightly colored, where most others have wings of soft, muted tones. Everyone will be able to see the butterflies and truly take comfort in their presence.
The way Monarchs and Painted Ladies fly is another contributing factor.
Where most other species are quick and move erratically, Monarchs and Painted Ladies fly slower, beating their wings less, and have much more graceful movements. They often appear as though they are gliding rather than actually flying. These movements are much easier to follow, allowing your guests to follow their movements.

Finally, Monarchs and Painted Ladies are among some of the friendliest species of butterflies, and are quite social. Where most other species of butterflies are skittish, and dart off when humans approach, Monarchs and Painted Ladies are likely to seek you out. Even after they are released, they are likely to linger, landing on tables and chairs, resting on flower arrangements, or even landing on the shoulders of you or your guests. This act of landing on you can bring a great sense of comfort during a sensitive time.
No matter if you choose Monarch butterflies, Painted Lady butterflies, or a combination of the two, these butterflies are a perfect addition to the memorial of your child. While they cannot take away your grief, they can help to lend a sense of serenity and peace. They let you, and your guests, know that, even though your child is no longer with you, their spirit still is.
Ways to Release Butterflies at Your Childs Memorial
There are two ways in which your Monarch or Painted Lady butterflies can be released during your butterfly release memorial service.

The Memorial Butterfly Release Process
After you place your order for your butterflies, they are shipped to arrive the day before your memorial service. No matter if you are doing a mass or an individual release, your butterflies are all shipped in individual envelopes. This is done for their safety. For an individual release, they are shipped already in their personalized envelopes. For a mass release, you will need to move your butterflies from their envelopes into their decorative box.
Video: How To Guide on Releasing Butterflies
View an example of opening a delivered butterfly release product in the video below.
Your shipment arrives with an ice pack, which is used to keep your butterflies is a dormant state (again, for their safety). It is recommended that you change the ice pack as soon as your box arrives to keep them dormant until the memorial service.
On the day of the memorial service, you will need to give the butterflies 30 minutes to an hour to warm up and wake up. If you are doing a mass release, it is recommended that you transfer your butterflies before they wake up to prevent them from escaping before the release. If you are doing an individual release, hand out the envelopes to your guests as they arrive, letting them know that these envelopes contain a live creature.
The moment you choose to release the butterflies is entirely up to you. You may choose to release them after a speech, or after everyone has shared their memories. For an individual release, people can release their butterflies individually after sharing a memory, or everyone can release their butterflies at the same time with a provided signal. No matter how you choose to release your butterflies, the sight of watching them drift up and then scatter around you is a beautiful one, and one that can provide everyone with a sense of calm during an otherwise very emotional time.
