There are many events for which releasing butterflies is an appropriate and beautiful gesture. Our butterflies for release
can be used for weddings, when the butterfly would represent love and change, as two people joined together to start their new life together. You can also choose to have a butterfly release during a funeral or memorial service, where our butterflies would represent the soul, life and rebirth, showing guests that the love one who has departed has been on an incredible journey and made many changes throughout his or her life, and is now on to a new adventure in the afterlife.

You have two options for releasing your butterflies, a mass butterfly release and an individual butterfly release.
A mass butterfly release allows you and other people to lift the lid of a decorative box and set free a mass of butterflies.

Butterflies are insects that carry a lot of meaning. And the symbolic nature of the butterfly is not limited to one culture or religion. In fact, it carries meaning through many cultures, such as Native American, Chinese, Japanese, Irish and many more. In Greek mythology, the butterfly is representative of Psyche, whose name translates to soul. Psyche is linked to love, because of her passionate bond with Eros, the god of love. These two are described as hopelessly in love. For this reason, releasing butterflies during a wedding is a symbolic gesture of celebrating the love between the newlyweds. To express their love, as well as the joy of this new life transition, the bride and groom can perform a mass release of butterflies from a decorative box. They can do this after they exchange rings or after they are pronounced married.

An old Native American belief is that in order for a wish to come true, a person must first capture a butterfly, whisper his or her wish to it and then let it go. The butterfly would then fly silently to the heavens, unable to reveal the wish to anyone but the Creator, who would grant it. To send their wishes to the bride and groom, the guests can individually release their own butterflies, whispering their wishes before opening the envelope and sending them out into the universe.

There are many other ways to use butterflies in a wedding ceremony, creating a very memorable experience. For instance, butterfly cages can be displayed throughout the wedding, and be released following the ceremony. This is a particularly unique way to add to a butterfly or spring theme wedding.

The wedding party, including the flower girls and ring bearer, can release butterflies following the announcement of the newly married couple. Or, instead of tossing rice as the bride and groom exit the ceremony, all of the guests can release butterflies. Any of these moments makes for an excellent photo opportunity and is a beautiful way to celebrate the union of two souls embarking upon their new journey.
In many belief systems, the butterfly is symbolic of the soul. It is representative of the journey of our lives, all of the twists and turns, the growth and transformations we have made. By the end, we are completely different than when we started.

Butterflies are also symbols of rebirth. Some cultures believe that a butterfly carries the soul of the deceased, and that the presence of a butterfly during a time of mourning is that soul saying goodbye.

Funerals are a time of mourning, but they are also a time of celebration. Releasing butterflies during a funeral service can serve many functions. First, these quiet, flitting creatures are a gentle touch added to a sensitive moment, as they drift around, offering comfort. They are a reflection of serenity and peace in an otherwise emotional time. And they serve to remind guests that there is life after death. As the caterpillar has undergone a metamorphosis to become a butterfly, so too has your loved one undergone a transformation to a new life, be it the afterlife or a whole new life on earth.

A funeral is a formal celebration of the life of a deceased loved one, but there are many moments in which butterflies can be released. If the service is outside, they can be released by individuals during the ceremony. Or they can be released at the end of the ceremony or at the grave site. This can be a symbol of the guests offering up comfort to the family. Or the immediate family may choose to do a mass release themselves, sending comfort to their guests. No matter how they are released, butterflies can remind you that your loved one is not really gone, but headed on to a new life.
Similar to a funeral, a memorial serves as a celebration of the life of a departed loved one, except in a more informal setting. You may choose to have the memorial in your backyard or at one of your loved one’s favorite locations. No matter where you choose to have the service, releasing butterflies is a beautiful way to honor that loved one’s life.

There are many ways to release butterflies at a memorial service. A release poem can be read. An individual release can take place after everyone has shared their memories of the departed. Or, each person may choose to release their butterfly after they have shared their story, sending a wish to the deceased or for the surviving family members.

Once they are released, the butterflies often linger for a while, before heading off to find food, and their presence can play a huge comforting role for everyone at the memorial. As they fly from person to person or land nearby, they serve as a reminder that even though their soul has left that physical body, it is not truly gone, and will be carried off to a new life.
The most popular type of butterfly used for release is the Painted Lady Butterfly which their butterfly release packages are featured on this page. These butterflies are similar to Monarchs in many ways. They have similar colors, a similar flight pattern, and are also quite sociable. The biggest difference between the two is that the Painted Lady is slightly smaller, though it is still one of the larger butterflies. These butterflies can be shipped throughout the United States.

Monarchs are native to much of the United States, except for west of the Continental Divide. For this reason, they cannot be shipped west of that line. The Monarch is one of the largest butterfly species, which means that even the guests at the back of a large event will be able to share in the wonderment.

Monarchs also have a different flight pattern than other species, flying more slowly, rather than quickly flitting about. And, they’re a more social butterfly. They are much more likely to spend some time amongst your guests, landing on nearby tables or chairs. Some guests may even be fortunate enough to have a butterfly land directly on them. Their presence is enough to delight guests of all ages.

Releasing butterflies is a simple, yet beautiful, way to commemorate an event, and can be done in several ways. The beginning of the process is the same, but depending upon how you choose to release the butterflies is where things differ.
View a how to guide on Releasing Butterflies for your events in the video below.
Butterflies are shipped in a dormant state, by use of an ice pack, to arrive the day before your event. They are sent in individual origami envelopes. If you are doing an individual release, these envelopes may be inscribed for the event, either with the names of the couple or that of the deceased. If you choose a mass release from a box or from a cage, these butterflies will need to be moved into that box or cage on the day of the event.
Butterflies need at least half an hour to an hour to warm up and wake up before being released. It is also important to note that butterflies should only be released outside during daylight hours, and it should be no cooler than 65 degrees and no warmer than 80. Individual envelopes should be handed out as close to the release time as possible.

With a specified signal, your guests can easily open their envelopes and let their butterflies free. If a mass release is being performed, a box may need a light shake while a cage simply needs to be opened. Once out in the open, your guests can enjoy the company of the butterflies as they flit from person to person.
