Milkweed contain a toxic component which is not harmful but helpful to the Monarch butterfly. It is used to warns off predators . Predators stay away from these black and orange butterflies because they fail to make a good meal.

The adult monarch butterflies feed on nectar and juicy fruits like bananas, oranges, and watermelons. They use their tongue that serves like a straw to slurp up juices and liquids. Painted Lady caterpillars feed on the host plants which can be any plant like Thistles, American Elm,Black Cherry,English Plantain,and daisies. These caterpillars will eat regularly and almost all the time until they form their chrysalis.
Nectar from flowers such as Aregoldenrods, Asters, Joe-pye Weed, Ironweed, Red Clover, and Blazing Star are the favourites of Painted Lady butterflies. They also love feeding from juicy fruits.
