Buy Butterflies to Release in Seattle

Seattle’s outdoor event geography extends from the urban parks and water-edge venues of the Seattle core — the Arboretum on Lake Washington, Volunteer Park’s Conservatory garden, Gas Works Park on Lake Union — across the 520 bridge to the Eastside’s Bellevue Botanical Garden, Mercer Island estates, and Kirkland and Redmond waterfront properties, and north through Snohomish County’s farm and estate venues in the Snohomish Valley. We deliver to all of those settings. Every shipment is packed for the Puget Sound’s specific maritime weather character: the temperature swings between a cloudy June morning and a clear August afternoon are significant here, and live butterfly packaging calibrated for Seattle’s climate performs differently from a standard national shipping configuration.

Painted Lady Butterflies Available in Seattle

The Washington Park Arboretum’s rhododendron and azalea display in May, when the 230-acre collection on Lake Washington’s western shore is at its most concentrated and vivid, is one of the most specific butterfly release settings in the Pacific Northwest. Painted Ladies (Vanessa cardui) released among the Arboretum’s layered spring bloom — rhododendron pinks and purples, azalea reds and whites, the tall Douglas firs providing the frame — move through the plantings with a particular unhurried quality that Seattle’s cool, damp spring air produces. They drift close to guests longer than in warm, dry climates; the cooler temperatures extend the moment rather than shortening it. Their two-to-three inch orange-and-black wings catch the Puget Sound’s diffused silver-gray light with the same clarity that Pacific Northwest outdoor photographers describe as the region’s defining natural quality.

Seattle’s release window runs from late May through mid-October. June through August are the most reliable months. The most important planning note for Seattle is June: local meteorologists call the late June dry period before the summer marine layer establishes Juneuary in reverse — actual warm, clear days can appear unpredictably in the second and third weeks of June, making those dates the finest single release window in the Seattle calendar. September is excellent. October is viable with weather monitoring. Before late May and after mid-October, temperatures and rain make outdoor releases unreliable.

Both individual envelopes and group release boxes are available. Every butterfly in your order is covered by the live arrival guarantee.

Butterfly Release for Different Events

Seattle event culture is outdoors-oriented, aesthetically particular, and genuinely suspicious of anything that does not earn its place. A butterfly release earns its place precisely because it asks something of the people present rather than performing at them.

Weddings

A Washington Park Arboretum wedding in late May or early June — during the rhododendron and azalea peak — is the most visually setting-specific outdoor ceremony in the Seattle metro. A butterfly release at the ceremony’s close, with the Lake Washington waterway behind the guests and the Arboretum’s Douglas fir canopy overhead, gives the couple a departure arc visible against the Northwest spring sky. For Mercer Island estate weddings and Bellevue Botanical Garden ceremonies, the release in the calm summer Puget Sound air drifts slowly and stays close to guests longer than in warmer markets — giving photographers more time at the intimate, hand-to-wing scale.

Funerals

Lakeview Cemetery on Capitol Hill — where Seattle’s oldest families have gathered their dead since 1872, with the Olympic Mountains visible across the Sound from the upper sections — gives funeral services in this city a setting that is both intimate in scale and enormous in backdrop. When envelopes open at Lakeview and Painted Ladies drift toward the Sound view before rising above the cedar and maple canopy, the group watches them go in the direction of the mountains, which Seattle keeps as a reference point for everything significant.

Memorials

Gas Works Park on the north shore of Lake Union — where the city’s industrial history has been absorbed into a public park with a grass hill that gives 360-degree views of Seattle’s skyline, the Cascade Mountains, and Lake Union — is the memorial gathering setting most specific to what Seattle actually is: industrial history, natural water, open sky, and a city skyline that the park refuses to let dominate the view. When butterflies rise from a Gas Works memorial and drift toward the lake before the breeze carries them skyward, they move across a panorama that no Seattle event space can design and no venue can book.

Birthdays and Graduations

University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific, Bellevue College, and the other institutions in the metro produce a graduation season from May through June that the Pacific Northwest’s academic community celebrates with the specific outdoor intensity of people who know the window. At a Montlake waterfront graduation party, a Medina estate birthday, or a Magnolia neighborhood garden celebration, the butterfly release gives the event its most naturally Pacific Northwest moment.

Community Events

Seattle’s community organizations, neighborhood improvement councils, and outdoor programs — from Bainbridge Island cultural events and Snohomish Valley farm gatherings to Eastside school outdoor days and South Seattle cultural festivals — reflect a region that earns its outdoor hours rather than taking them for granted. A butterfly release at any of those programs gives the occasion a living element that the Pacific Northwest’s ecological consciousness receives as a genuine rather than a decorative gesture.

How to Release Painted Lady Butterflies

Seattle’s maritime climate requires the Pacific Northwest version of the standard release protocol — with adjustments that matter here.

  • Store the insulated container in a fully air-conditioned interior room between 40 and 60 degrees from arrival until the 30-minute warm-up — not a Seattle garage (too cold on cool days) or a sun-facing prep space (too warm on clear August days)
  • Check ice packs on arrival; Seattle’s coastal temperature swings can affect the container temperature during overnight delivery more than in stable-climate markets
  • Plan the release for the warmest window in the day — Seattle’s afternoon temperature peak is typically 2 to 5 PM in summer and 1 to 4 PM in fall; morning releases can be cool enough to suppress butterfly flight
  • Check the forecast morning-of for marine layer and rain — Seattle’s overcast July can clear by noon or can persist all day; the morning forecast is more reliable than the two-day outlook for same-day release decisions
  • At waterfront venues — Arboretum, Gas Works, Mercer Island — position the release group so the onshore breeze comes from behind the guests; the butterflies will fly toward the water before rising, extending the visible departure arc
  • Begin the 30-minute warm-up in a room-temperature indoor space, container completely undisturbed, before moving outside

Plan Your Seattle Butterfly Release With Cloverlawn Butterflies

May and June are our fastest-filling months in the Pacific Northwest delivery area. Washington Park Arboretum events during the rhododendron peak from late May through early June book out weeks in advance. If your event is in that window, place your order at least three to four weeks before your date. September events at Mercer Island and Bellevue venues move faster than clients expect. For the shorter Seattle window, earlier ordering is better than later.

The Pacific Northwest has about five months of outdoor events. Use them well.
