Step 1 — Marine layer timing on coastal event days.

Schedule the release after 10 or 11 AM along the coast, once the morning layer has cleared and the sun is warming the air directly. Inland venues — Rancho Santa Fe, El Cajon, Escondido — can release earlier.

Step 2 — Cool storage from arrival.

Keep the insulated container in a cool, dark, air-conditioned interior room between 40 and 60 degrees. San Diego inland temperatures in summer and early fall can climb quickly in a car or garage.

Step 3 — 30-minute warm-up.

Move the container from cool storage to a room-temperature indoor space, undisturbed, for half an hour before the release. This step activates the butterflies gradually — the difference between a flat release and a beautiful one.

Step 4 — Santa Ana wind check for inland venues.

For events in Rancho Santa Fe, Escondido, El Cajon, or other inland locations in fall, check the forecast for Santa Ana conditions. These offshore winds are worth rescheduling around when possible.
