Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle

The Monarch butterfly, often referred to as the “king” of butterflies, has four stages of life. Every year sees about four generations. In early spring, the last generation of butterflies from the previous year come out of hibernation to find a mate. They then lay their eggs, which is done on the leaves of the milkweed plant.

When the egg hatches, a baby caterpillar emerges. All it does in this, larval, stage, is eat and grow. When it is ready, the caterpillar finds a safe place to attach itself to, such as a leaf or branch, out of the way of predators.

It emits a silk thread and attaches itself to its chosen location, hanging upside down. Then, the caterpillar does something amazing. Its body becomes hard, turning into a chrysalis. From the outside, it looks like nothing is happening. However, inside the chrysalis, a transformation, or metamorphosis, is happening.

The caterpillar essentially liquefies and reforms itself into its final form. When the transformation is complete, the newly formed butterfly emerges. At first, its wings are bunched up and damp. It doesn’t take long, though, for the sun and air to dry the butterfly’s wings and it can take off in search of food and a mate. Shortly after laying their eggs, this generation of butterfly dies, and the next begins.

What Do Monarch Butterflies Eat?

Like all butterflies, Monarch butterflies alter their diet as they change. During the caterpillar stage, they subsist only the milkweed plant, which is how the Monarch butterfly is often dubbed the milkweed butterfly. The milkweed plant is a wildflower, from the genus Asclepias. This plant contains toxins, known as glycoside toxins, that are completely harmless to the Monarch. But, while harmless to the Monarch, it is deadly poisonous to the Monarch’s predators. During its two weeks as a caterpillar, the Monarch eats all different parts of the milkweed plant, all the while storing the toxins it consumes in its body. Even after the Monarch transforms from a caterpillar to an adult butterfly, the toxins remain in its system, making the butterfly just as poisonous to predators as the caterpillar.

Monarch butterflies, in their final stage, are more adventurous in their dining habits. They feed on the nectar of a wide variety of flowers, including the nectar of the milkweed flowers. They also enjoy sweet fruits, like ripe banana and watermelon. Some gardening centers even have special butterfly feeders that are brightly colored like flowers and allow you to add a special sugar mix for them to enjoy.

The Monarch butterfly has an interesting way of consuming its sweet foods. Instead of a mouth, it has a proboscis, which is a straw-like pipe that stays curled up under its head. When they reach a flower (or nice, sweet fruit) they unfurl their proboscis and suck up the nectar.

How Long Do Monarch Butterflies Live?

The total average lifespan for a Monarch butterfly, from egg to butterfly (a single generation), ranges anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. Once the egg is laid, it takes approximately 4 days before it hatches. The larval stage, or caterpillar, lasts about 2 weeks, during which the caterpillar is doing little more than eating and growing. When it forms its chrysalis, the butterfly takes about 10 days to develop. The fully-grown Monarch butterfly then lives for another 2 to 6 weeks, during which time it flies around, feeding on flowers and enjoying its life.

Monarch Butterfly Habitat

Monarch butterflies can be found all over the United States, even in Hawaii, having found their way there due to release, or having simply lost their way lost their way from California. They can also be found in southern Canada, Mexico, South America and the Caribbean islands. Most Monarchs live east of the Rocky Mountains. The Monarch butterfly habitat depends significantly upon the seasons.

In the spring through early fall, they can be found where ever there are milkweeds. Milkweeds are wildflowers, and are found in fields, meadows and park areas. Many avid gardeners will even plant milkweeds in their gardens to entice the monarchs into their yards. The monarch cannot survive the freezing temperatures of the north, and therefore seek shelter in the south, including the southern coast of California and high altitudes of central Mexico.

Monarch Butterfly Migration

Monarch butterflies cannot survive the cold winters of the north. For this reason, when fall arrives, they migrate south. Migration often starts in October, but it can start sooner, if the weather starts getting cold before then. Instead of reproducing, the last generation of Monarchs take off for warmer regions. Monarchs in the eastern parts of the United States head for Mexico, traveling great distances to hibernate in oyamel fir trees. Those in the western United States head for southern California, around the Pacific Grove region, and take up residence on eucalyptus trees.

There are two reasons for Monarch migration. The first, which has been touched upon already, is that they cannot survive the freezing winter temperatures of the north. The second reason that they migrate is that because the necessary larval food, milkweeds, do not grow in in the regions where they overwinter. For this reason, they must make the long journey back up north when spring arrives again.

The Monarch butterfly is a fascinating creature. Here are just a few facts about them:

  • The species of Monarch butterfly found in North America is different than the one found in South America. And the Caribbean houses both species.
  • The Monarch caterpillar is a voracious eater. It has the ability to devour an entire milkweed leaf in under 5 minutes. Over their two-week span as a caterpillar, they gain over 2,700 times their original weight.
  • As it grows, the caterpillar sheds its skin, called an instar. In some instances, the caterpillar may eat this shed skin along with the milkweed plants.
  • The temperature outside plays a role in the length of the chrysalis stage. Depending on how warm it is, this stage can last anywhere from 9 to 14 days.
  • The Monarch butterfly is among one of the largest butterflies, with a wingspan reaching 10 centimeters.
  • The Monarch butterfly does not actually have lungs. Instead, it breathes through spiracles, or small vents on its thorax. A tube system (trachea) distributes oxygen throughout the body.
  • Ever wonder which butterflies are males and which are females? There’s actually a very easy way to tell the difference. Male Monarch butterflies have a black spot on the inside of its hind wings, whereas females do not.
  • The bright orange color of the Monarch’s wings are meant to warn its predators that it is poisonous. The toxins that build up within the caterpillar, thanks to the milkweed plant, stay alive and well in the body of the Monarch. However, this poison is only effective vertebrate predators, such as frogs, lizards and birds. The amount of damage done depends upon how much is actually ingested.
  • Monarch butterflies can see a wide spectrum of color and UV light, and can see colors that humans cannot.
  • Monarchs use their eyes to see flowers. However, they use their antennae to smell the nectar and their feet (which contain tiny receptors known as tarsi) to taste the nectar.
  • Monarch butterflies flap their wings slower than most other butterflies, usually flapping between 300 to 720 times per minute.
  • Female Monarchs lay their eggs one at a time, and can lay upwards of 250 eggs in a single day.
  • Monarch butterflies can fly at speeds ranging between 12 and 25 miles per hour.
  • When the Monarch migrates south, they travel a great distance. Some Monarchs, traveling south from Canada, will journey 2,500 miles to reach the oyamel fir trees in Michoacan hills of central Mexico.
  • Even to this day, it is unknown how the Monarchs know which direction to fly when migrating.
  • In general, the wingspan of Monarch butterflies ranges between 3 ½ to 4 inches wide. However, the final generation of the year, the ones who migrate, tend to have wingspans in excess of 4 inches wide.
  • Just like birds, Monarchs use air currents and thermals to help make their journey. The highest Monarch was recorded by a glider pilot at 11,000 feet, or almost 2 miles up!
  • While the average distance traveled in a day is unknown, there is a record of one tagged Monarch that traveled 265 miles in a single day while on its way to its winter home.
  • Migrating Monarchs use the exact same trees every year, even though they have never been there before.
  • In 1986, the Mexican authorities converted 62 square miles of forest in the Sierra Madres to what is now called the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. In 2000, they expanded it to encompass over 200 acres. This region is the winter home to hundreds of millions of Monarch butterflies every year.

Releasing Your Monarch Butterflies

On the day of your event, you will need to give your butterflies at least 30 minutes to an hour to wake up. All you need to do is remove the ice pack. If you are doing a mass release, use the time that they are still dormant to transfer the butterflies to their box. Don’t wait until they are awake, or you may wind up losing one or two of them in your home. When the moment arrives for you to release them, all you need to do is simply give the box a very light shake to motivate the butterflies, and lift the lid. The exact moment you choose to release them is up to you and anyone else doing the release with you. After all, it’s your special event, and your release should be unique to you.

If you are doing an individual release, your Monarch butterflies will arrive already in their personalized envelopes. Before the beginning of your event, hand the envelopes to your guests as they arrive. Be sure to warn them that there is a live creature inside and they should handle the envelope delicately. When you are ready, give your guests a signal (again, the exact moment depends upon your individual event) and let them open their envelopes and set their butterfly free.

Even though Monarch butterflies are an adaptable butterfly, and can thrive in just about any environment, there are still a few things you should keep in mind before setting your butterflies loose. First, always set them free outside. If they are released indoors, they may never make it out. And when you do set them free, make sure that there are still plenty of daylight hours. This will ensure that you get to spend plenty of time with your butterflies before they head off at dusk in search of food and a safe place to sleep. The weather must also be temperate. Monarch butterflies may be hardy, but if it is too cold, or even too hot, it is not good for them. Ideally, they should be released on a day when the temperature is going to be no cooler than 65 degrees, but no warmer than 80. It should also not be raining or overly windy, as these conditions are detrimental to these delicate creatures. By following these guidelines, you will be sure to have an enjoyable, memorable butterfly release that people will be talking about for many years to come.
