Los Angeles County has ten million residents and a geography that spans from the Pacific coast to the edge of the Mojave Desert — and our delivery area reflects that range. We deliver to all communities in LA County, plus Pasadena, Alhambra, El Monte, and the full San Gabriel Valley corridor; Long Beach and the South Bay; the San Fernando Valley from Burbank to Chatsworth; and communities in Orange County including Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Irvine, as well as Ventura County cities including Thousand Oaks and Oxnard. Each shipment is packed for the coastal/inland temperature split that defines Los Angeles’s climate.

Packages start at one dozen butterflies and scale to 200 or more. At 100 butterflies or above, a complimentary extra dozen is included automatically. All packaging formats, inscriptions, and ribbon colors are customizable.

Painted Lady Butterflies Available in Los Angeles

Every spring, Painted Ladies (Vanessa cardui) pass through Southern California in one of the largest butterfly migrations recorded in North America, and the Los Angeles basin sits directly in their path. The same species that fills the canyons above Malibu and the arroyos of the San Gabriel Mountains each March is the one guests release from their hands at a Descanso Gardens wedding or a Griffith Park memorial. Their two-to-three inch orange-and-black wings read clearly in both the bright coastal light of Santa Monica and the warmer, drier light of the San Gabriel Valley, and their unhurried flight in Southern California’s mild air gives guests plenty of time to watch before the butterflies rise.

Los Angeles’s release calendar is one of the most flexible in the country. The coastal zone from Malibu through the Palos Verdes Peninsula runs mild year-round, with marine layer mornings clearing by late morning and afternoons settling into calm, clear conditions. The inland valleys — San Gabriel, San Fernando, Pomona — run warmer in summer, making events after 5 PM the right call from June through September. Spring from February through May and fall from September through November are the strongest windows everywhere in the county.

Both individual envelopes and group release boxes are available. Every butterfly in your order is covered by the live arrival guarantee.

Butterfly Release for Different Events

Los Angeles produces events the way it produces everything else: with technical skill, strong aesthetics, and a professional-grade approach to every element. A butterfly release earns its place on an LA program not because it matches that level of production but because it briefly and completely bypasses it.

Weddings

Descanso Gardens, the Huntington Library gardens in San Marino, Rancho Las Lomas wildlife sanctuary, and the clifftop venues of Malibu and Palos Verdes give Los Angeles couples a setting range that no other American metro matches in sheer variety. A butterfly release at any of those settings adds a living, unrepeatable element that the venue’s natural beauty alone cannot provide. In the San Gabriel Valley, Painted Ladies in flight over koi pond reflections and Japanese garden plantings create one of the most striking release images we see from any market we serve.

Quinceañeras

The quinceañera is one of the most seriously organized events in Los Angeles’s social calendar, and East LA, Boyle Heights, the Eastside communities, and the broader San Gabriel Valley host more of them per year than any comparable area in California. At the moment the young woman opens her envelope — her court surrounding her, three generations of family watching — the butterfly that pauses on her hand before flying gives the ceremony a gesture that belongs entirely to that moment and to nobody who planned the program.

Funerals

Funeral services across Los Angeles County bring communities together that in this city often span multiple generations and multiple countries of origin. A butterfly release at the close of a graveside service gives a large, diverse gathering a shared physical action that requires no common language: the envelopes open, the butterflies lift into the Southern California sky, and the group watches them go in a silence that the city’s ambient noise stays outside of.

Memorials

Griffith Park, the Rose Garden at Exposition Park, the Japanese Garden at the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys, and private outdoor spaces throughout the county give memorial gatherings in Los Angeles a range of natural settings. At any of those venues, a butterfly release gives the gathering a direction — upward and outward, toward the Santa Monica Mountains or the San Gabriel peaks or the Pacific, depending on where the group is standing.

Birthdays and Graduations

UCLA, USC, Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, Loyola Marymount, and the dozens of other institutions in Greater LA make this one of the most graduation-dense markets in the country from late May through mid-June. At a Westwood garden party, a Pasadena estate graduation celebration, or a backyard milestone birthday in Silver Lake, the butterfly release gives the event the one thing the host’s planning cannot account for: something alive that moves on its own schedule inside an afternoon that has been organized in detail.

How to Release Painted Lady Butterflies

Los Angeles hosts ask specific questions based on the city’s coastal/inland split. Here are the answers.

Does the coastal marine layer affect the release timing?

Yes, for venues west of the 405 or close to the beach. Plan the release after 10 or 11 AM on most coastal days, once the morning layer has burned off. Inland venues — Pasadena, the San Gabriel Valley, the San Fernando Valley — are generally not affected and can release earlier.

How do I store the butterflies in an LA venue prep space?

Place the insulated container immediately in an air-conditioned indoor room between 40 and 60 degrees on arrival. In summer, an LA garage or outdoor prep area will exceed the safe range quickly. Hotel event prep rooms, catering staging areas with AC, or a venue green room are the right choices.

When should I start the warm-up?

About 30 minutes before the release, move the container from cool storage to room temperature indoors, undisturbed. At Descanso or the Huntington, factor the walk from staging to ceremony into your timeline so the warm-up finishes before the container moves outside.

What about Santa Ana winds?

For fall and early winter events at inland and canyon venues, check the forecast for Santa Ana wind advisories. Those offshore winds can be strong enough at canyon locations to make a butterfly release unpredictable and worth rescheduling around.
